Make sure the diagnosis is understood

Ask which test established diabetes, whether it needs confirmation and which type is most likely. Age alone does not determine type, and pregnancy or acute illness can change the assessment.

Build a small, safe first plan

Learn medicine names and timing, meter technique if monitoring is advised, low-glucose warning signs, and a realistic meal pattern. Choose two or three actions rather than trying to change everything at once.

Plan the checks that matter

A baseline review often considers blood pressure, weight, kidney function, urine albumin, lipids, eyes, feet, liver risk and vaccination history. Timing should be individualized.

Frequently asked questions

Did I cause diabetes by eating sugar?

No single food causes diabetes. Genetics, insulin resistance, weight, age, pregnancy, medicines and other factors interact.

Will I need medicine forever?

That cannot be decided on day one. Needs can change with diabetes type, weight, illness, pregnancy and response to treatment.
