Fat is not the only question

The main long-term concern is whether inflammation and fibrosis are developing. An ultrasound can show fat but does not reliably stage fibrosis, so clinicians combine risk factors with validated non-invasive tests.

How FIB-4 is used

FIB-4 uses age, AST, ALT and platelet count to estimate fibrosis risk. Age and clinical context affect interpretation. An indeterminate or higher-risk result may lead to elastography or specialist review rather than proving cirrhosis.

Treatment is cardiometabolic

Sustainable weight loss, physical activity and management of glucose, blood pressure and lipids form the foundation. Selected diabetes or obesity medicines may support liver and cardiometabolic goals after individual assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Can fatty liver improve?

Yes. Liver fat and inflammation may improve with sustained metabolic treatment, but fibrosis risk still needs appropriate assessment.

Does every fatty liver need a biopsy?

No. Clinicians usually begin with non-invasive risk assessment and reserve biopsy for selected situations.
