What assessment may include

History, footwear review, skin and nail inspection, sensation testing, pulses and reflexes help define risk. Clinicians may consider B12, thyroid, kidney or other tests when appropriate.

Treatment has several parts

Improving glucose safely, addressing a cause such as B12 deficiency when present, choosing suitable symptom treatment, and daily foot protection work together.

Protect a numb foot

Check both feet daily, avoid barefoot walking and hot-water bottles, test bath water safely, and use properly fitting footwear. Treat small injuries early.
