What the examination looks for

A retinal examination checks for small blood-vessel changes, bleeding, swelling near the macula and other causes of visual loss. A spectacle-power check alone is not the same as a retinal screening examination.

Timing is individual

People with type 1 and type 2 diabetes have different recommendations for the first examination. Once retinopathy is found, follow-up may need to be more frequent. Pregnancy planning and pregnancy require specific eye review.

Protect more than glucose

Glucose, blood pressure, kidney health, lipids and smoking all matter to eye risk. Rapid glucose improvement can occasionally change retinopathy in susceptible people, so major treatment changes should still be clinically monitored.

Frequently asked questions

Is a routine spectacle test enough?

No. A diabetes eye examination needs to assess the retina, usually through dilated pupils or appropriate retinal imaging.

Can retinopathy be treated?

Yes. Treatment can protect vision, particularly when disease is found before severe visual loss occurs.
